I have been a very bad girl.

It all started with an innocent stroll around town. I already had my first gelato in Verona. It was okay, the guy behind the counter was nice, and it made for a pleasant end to the day. Suddenly I see a corner packed with people and a line coming outside a store. People emerging with cups and cones of gelato and whipped cream, chatting away in Italian.

I knew then that it was fate and that I had to return to try what clearly looked like a potential party in my mouth. Naturally after the first time, I came back two more times (and I'm not even going to tell you how many times Oli and I debated on whether it would be okay to get back on line for a second cone).

The store is adorable and kitschy (as all trendy places are now a days). They also had a fridge of what looked like incredible cakes that we never got to try because every time we went into their shop, we became gelato junkies.

Yes guys, we struggled to return to reality each time.

The product in question is absolutely lovely! First they drip your choice of melted dark or white chocolate into the tip of the cone, then you get to choose 2 flavors from their selection. I loved every flavor I chose so I'm guessing you can't really go wrong. They don't do very unique and far out there flavors like I've seen in other gelaterias in Rome and Florence, but what they do do (which are Italian classics such as Fior di Latte, Stracciatella, and Zabaione), they do very well.

Luckily La Romana is a chain and you can find one in various cities around Italy. Buon Appetito!

Hey guys, as you may or may not know, I am currently in my hometown New York City! My flight consisted of an overnight layover in Helsinki, so I hit up my friend Marinka and we did a quick tour of the central area. It quickly became something of a food tour since, well, it's me, and there were just so many foreign foods to try!

My first night in, my friend Marinka picked me up from the airport and we went to a 24-hour grocery store. I have YET to find a 24 hour store in Berlin, especially on a Sunday, so I am in awe at how much more advanced Helsinki is already. But more so, I was intrigued by this Licorice flavored ice cream??! Finns love their licorice, eh?

The loot from the grocery store. Oh and I had that Susu bar yesterday and it reminds me of Twix candy bars.

The next morning we walked by a farmer's market near the ports.

THIS. It's OMG-good. It's like having your fish and chips in one go. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the fish or what this snack is called so if anyone knows, please inform me!

After maybe 20 minutes or so, we spontaneously decided to look for reindeer. It sparked from Marinka's idea to go get some reindeer waffles but because the place was closed, we went to a gourmet food store in the basement of a department store instead.

The man at the counter was so friendly and also recommended a lingonberry tart. It was very good--it's not a sweet berry so it went well with the savory tart. The reindeer, I concluded, tastes like a smoked ham. It could be the way it was prepared in the dish (also Marinka said the texture is quite different in real life) but none the less, it was salty and delicious.

Browsing the supermarket portion of the department store, I was somehow amused by a cereal called "Rude Health."

And then we found this jelly!

I have never heard of cloudberries before! I did a bit of research and they seem to be indigenous to Northern Europe and Canada. I wanted to take a jar with me so badly but we couldn't find a jar 100g or smaller (I only had a carry on so it was vital that it fit those requirements). I hope one day I can try this fantasticle sounding fruit . . .

Finally we ended up at Frazer cafe. It was quite big and pretty full of people enjoying lunch. I was completely distracted by all the cute Moomin goodies they had before heading to the pastry aisle and picking something out.

A butter eye? Well, it makes sense since it's buttery on top and looks like an eye. The taste was pretty similar to a Swedish cinnamon roll so in other words, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I really want to come back to Helsinki and visit the other islands (and try to swing for a day other than Monday, when all museums are closed). I hope you guys liked what you saw and if you know of anything I should try in Finland but missed, let me know! Ciao!

Okonomiyaki is a popular Japanese street food and it literally means "grill as you like it". Very suitable because depending on the region you're in, the fillings can vary immensely. The base of it though is a cabbage-filled savory pancake made on a hot pan.

This is my first attempt and I suppose it doesn't look much like the ones you would actually get in Japan. But hey, I had to improvise with what they had at the Asian store (and the amount of cash in my wallet).

It is fairly straightforward. In fact, it's pretty hard to mess up. Just cut the greens, mix in the wet, put it on a pan, and you're good to go.

If you're like me and flipping okonomiyaki is not in your genes, don't worry, you can just push in the broken edges and try again.

Shredded cheese is a totally acceptable topping!

Katsuobushi and Aonori is found on many Okonomiyakis but since neither were available, I cut up Nori and just left the Katsuobushi out!

If anyone is curious, the recipe I used can be found HERE. Give it a go if you're ever in the mood for an unconventional savory pancake that is different from the Western traditions!

Hello everybody and Merry Christmas Eve to you all! I know I've been showcasing my photos from Paris lately but I thought it was only appropriate to [finally] make my Christmas Market post I promised a little while back. So here are the photos from the Christmas Market in Gendarmenmarkt!
Also read to the end for some exciting news and to figure out where Part I is!

The entrance was very pretty as was the large Christmas tree!

It was after the food poisoning that I was battling my desire for trying new things with my actual need for comfort. My friend and host Sophie told me that I should go to Rue Saint Anne near the Pyramides Metro stop because there I can find many Japanese restaurants and shops. I did just that and found Aki, a restaurant which also has a Boulangerie (bakery)!

The chalkboard menu outside is super cute!
Alas I only got a Onigiri (riceball) with sour plum. It felt good to eat rice . . .

The place was very popular and there was a good mix of French and Japanese people. They also had lovely looking bentos but they all had meat and it made my stomach do back flips. If you are ever in Paris and looking for some Japanese food, go down this street! And look for Aki!

Finding the right bakery can be hard sometimes. There's so many and all you want is a flaky pastry right now~! It's easy to just buy one anywhere but guaranteed most of the time it's a disappointment. Sometimes you do luck out and find one that's really good. A tip may be to look for one marked Artisan because it means they make it in house!

Paris in Snaps III

Welcome to Paris in snaps! I will post a few pictures of Paris in snaps, the way I did last year. A few things I will write out more extensively, but look forward to seeing how I spent my time in Paris!

I know what you nuggets are thinking: mall food = expensive bland food. To be fair, you're probably right 80% of the time. Then there's the other 20% that's actually not too shabby.

Note: It gets no award for plating and those Buffalo Wings are not in anyway Buffalo Wings nor Mexican, BUT the food was pretty good. In fact, Oli practically licked the plate. I got the enchiladas because I missed my Dos Enchiladas from Quantum Leap! I have to say I prefer the ones from Quantum Leap (those bad boys show up in my dreams from time to time), but these are half the price and also delish!

Not sure the name of the place but it is in Hallen am Borsigturm!

When people visit Berlin, Mauer Park is always on their list of places to see, and for a good reason; Mauer Park has a famous Flea Market every Sunday. From special artisan goods to tofu burgers to old Polaroid cameras, this place has everything and a bag of chips. If you're not looking to buy anything, that works too--just sit on a stone step and listen to some ridiculous karaoke for a good chunk of your afternoon.

Oli and I realized that although we've separately gone to Mauer Park on several occasions, we never went together. So since his band practice was cancelled, we decided to go!

Getting back into the rhythm of things is hard after a week of indulging. I'm pretty sure at one point I smelled like potatoes and gravy, and maybe a bit of Stollen as well. In any case, I'm back in Berlin for now (more like, for the next few hours until going to Poland tonight!) and I need to get back into my groove.

That being said, see this little chap just winking at me?

That there is a  Döner Kebab. He may seem really innocent but underneath all that toasted breadyness is a pile of tempting meat and vegetables. Okay, it doesn't sound that bad, but when it's the only thing available at 3 am, in between parties, it's pretty dangerous. You just want him and he calls to you. He listens to you. He becomes your friend. And then Wabam! He's always there!

. . . .

Well, at least you can count on him, eh?

Paris in a Shot III

Thursday, December 6, 2012

I'm the type of girl who starts prepping for Christmas as early as I can without being thought a weirdo. I'm talking sucking on candy canes, buying loads of wrapping paper and ribbon, and figuring out what homemade tasties to make and give to friends.

I think the whole world is with me on this one. I mean, let's not forget how early the holiday music starts playing at Starbucks (let's just say it's only pleasant to people who don't work there, made clear by a few of my employed friends). So how does Germany celebrate? They set up these cute little house looking stands, sell German fare, set up rides for children, and call it a Christmas Market.

Exhibit A:

Knacker and Kale
Champignons and Krauter Sauce

These were taken at the Kulturbraurei near Eberswalderstr. U-bahn. My first German Christmas market (and definitely not the last!) My only qualm of course is that things are just a tad pricier than I would like them to be (8 euro bowl of sausage and kale!) but I'm paying for the atmosphere and the atmosphere is quite jolly.

I think Ole Saint Nick himself would be pretty proud.

You know you've had one of those nights. A night you remember too well even though you shouldn't, because you downed some Vodka and a drink with 4 different kinds of Rum in it, and you washed that down with juice and pudding and wurst. It doesn't happen often (God forbid), but when it does, you just gotta roll with the punches. Or pommes (fries), shall I say.

Now, I know quite a few people against Currywurst. It's not healthy sure, and once you start eating them, you realize it's hard to find good ones. Well, I compare it to a Starbucks coffee. Starbucks kinda tastes like burnt water, but it's fun holding the little cup around and walking the streets of NY like you mean business. Eating Currywurst is fun in Berlin, because you're in Berlin.

Well, if I've convinced you enough (or you just have a huge hangover and need to nurse it), you can get this puppy at Curry 36 (Mehringdamm 36). Chow down baby!
